1. General information

Green purchasing initiatives in Japan
1996 Green Purchasing Network (GPN) was founded as a network to promote green procurement among businesses, governmental organizations and consumers in Japan.
- Member organizations: 2,876 (as of 2006)
- Activities: establishing green purchasing guidelines, holding seminars and exhibitions, offering information including GPN Data Base for Green Purchasing, etc.
2001 Law on Promoting Green Purchasing was established, to require the national government and other public entities to procure eco-friendly goods and services that meet certain standards
According to the survey by the Ministry of the Environment, the government and related entities have achieved a high level of green purchasing since FY 2003 (over 95 percent of the products/services are purchased under the Green Procurement Law).

2. Introduction of the booth: Green Purchasing of Food Products
l GPN will display panels to introduce the idea of green purchasing of food products, including points to choose environmentally friendly food products at each stage of production of raw materials, processing, distribution, consumption, and disposal/recycling. (e.g. the method how the food was produced, the distance of transporting food, environmentally friendly packaging and containers, etc.)
